Special Session - June 1, 2020

The Board of Directors of the Community School District of South Tama County met on June 1, 2020 for a Special  Meeting at the Partnership Center, Tama, Iowa at 5:00 p.m. with some members of the board and community attending electronically through Google Hangouts.


On call of the roll the following were present:  Ron Houghton, Alan Kline, Mandy Lekin, Penny Tyynismaa and Clint Werner.  Quorum Present.

Also present were: Jared Smith, Mary Boege and several members of the community.


Motion by Kline second by Houghton to approve the amended agenda adding additional personnel.  All Ayes.


Public Comments - Ashley Raue addressed the Board on the Middle School Playground and Allison Graham addressed the board about the Softball and Baseball Season this summer.


Motion by Lekin, second by Kline to approve the following personnel requests.  All Ayes.


Contracts - Jarrod Bridgewater - Assistant Baseball, Michelle Kalinay - Food Service Director, Travis McBride - 6th Social Studies, Hillary Port - 4th Grade, Alison Vavra - HS At-Risk, Samantha Cantonwine - Assistant HS Softball, Josh Bly - Assistant HS Baseball

Resignations - Rachel Davis - Individual Speech Coach, Dina Keahna - 9th Boys Basketball, Marin Verhulst - 4th Grade, Levi Hunerdosse - HS Health, 7-12 Assistant Activities Director and Girls Track.


Motion by Lekin, second by Kline to approve the original bid from Kluesner Construction of $53,720 to asphalt the Middle School playground.  Motion carried with four yes votes and one nay vote from Werner.


Superintendent Smith updated the Board on looking at the land around the Iowa Juvenile Home as a possible site for the Middle School. 


Curriculum Director Shauna Smith reviewed with the Board changes that they would like to make with Lead  and Model Teachers.


Technology Director Mary Mixdorf addressed the Board on the technology needs for the 2020-2021 school year if we need to start the year with distant learning and home internet options for families.


Curriculum Director Shauna Smith reviewed with the Board the Science Curriculum Adoption.


Superintendent Smith updated the Board on a Return to Learn task force that will focus on what next year might look like.


Board Policy 207.10 - Publication of Meeting Proceedings will need to be updated with the name change of our newspaper.


Superintendent Smith discussed how the Softball and Baseball season will be handled this summer with COVID19  


Summer Board Meetings will be held as usual on the first and third Monday of the month.


Motion by Houghton, second by Kline to adjourn the meeting at 6:44 p.m.
