Special Session - March 4, 2019

SPECIAL SESSION

OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION OF THE

COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT OF SOUTH TAMA COUNTY

 

The Board of Directors of the Community School District of South Tama County met on March 4, 2019 in Special Session at the Partnership Center, Tama, Iowa at 5:34 p.m.

 

On call of the roll the following were present:   Jackie Dvorak, Ronald Houghton, Mandy Lekin and Penny Tyynismaa. Absent:  Alan Kline.  Quorum Present.

 

Also present were: Jared Smith, Mary Boege, John Speer, Carrie Keenan, Joe Tafta, Molly Tafta, Natasha Becker and Marin Verhulst.

 

Motion by Houghton second by Dvorak to approve the agenda.  All Ayes.

 

Public Comments - Carrie Keenan addressed the Board on the possibility of having Structured Literacy tutoring for students with dyslexia.

 

Motion by Lekin, second by Dvorak to approve the following personnel requests as presented.  All Ayes

 

Officials - David Lee - Track, John Bartello - Wrestling, Brandon Dufoe - Wrestling, Steve Klingaman - Wrestling, Andrew May - Wrestling, Bob Yilek - Wrestling.

Resignations - Sarah Fitzsimmons - HS Special Education, Nate Van Dyke - Weight Room Supervisor.

 

Motion by Houghton, second by Dvorak to approve the final reading of Board Policy Series 200.  All Ayes.

 

Motion by Houghton, second by Dvorak to approve the one time exception to board policy to schedule a soccer game on Wednesday, May 8th with CCA.   All Ayes.

 

Motion by Lekin, second by Dvorak to approve the request to add the new courses Research and Writing and Theatre Arts I at the High School.  All Ayes.

 

Motion by Dvorak, second by Houghton to approve the STC Dance Team trip request to Orlando, Florida during April of 2020 and approve the fundraisers to be held to fund the trip. All Ayes.

 

Motion by Houghton, second by Lekin to approve the Certified Teacher salary increase of 2.17% for the 2019-2020 school year.  All Ayes.

 

Superintendent Smith proposed offering a Teacher Referral Program that would pay a stipend to any staff member that is able to recruit new teaching staff to South Tama Schools.

 

Superintendent Smith discussed possible ways to make up time for school days missed so far this year.

 

Motion by Houghton, second by Lekin to adjourn the meeting at 6:22 p.m. into an exempt session.  All Ayes.
