The South Tama County Middle School Student-Athlete Spotlight swings to Makayla Backen.  Makayla is a 7th grader at STC.  She is a wing for the Trojan basketball team.

With the girls basketball season a few weeks from coming to an end, Makayla has developed into a lock down defender and helped the 7th grade squad fend off a Vinton team in the closing minutes for an important road win. “She is the go-to girl for keeping the team positive, hustling, and composed”, said Coach Van Zante when asked what Makayla brings to the team.

Makayla is an active middle schooler. In addition to basketball, she is involved in softball, track & field, volleyball, band, and participates in cheer camp. She is involved in her church confirmation group, enjoys dancing, being with friends, and shopping during her free time from her busy schedule.

Away from the hardwood, Makayla is a standout student in the classroom. She is a Gold Academic Award recipient and Honor Roll student during her two years at the middle school. She has received the Kiwanis Golden Ruler Award for her hard work as a sixth grader in 2013-14.

Makayla is the daughter of Trever and Holly Backen of rural Tama.
