Bullying and Harassment Prevention Week

The month of October has been designated as National Bullying Prevention Month.

Students Sign Pledge to Be Respectful

During the first week and a half of school students at the middle school have focused on what it means to be respectful, responsible students who strive to build positive relationships with other students.  The three “R’s” (Respect, Responsibility, and Relationships) will guide student behavior at the middle school throughout the 2011-2012 school year.

From the Principal's Desk

After the first week of school, I would like to spend some time reflecting on the start of the school year. I first want to thank the teachers, associates, custodians, and secretaries for all their hard work to prepare for the school year. Secondly, I would like to thank the students and parents for their support and dedication. We have had a great start to the year. I was very impressed with out turnout for open house. In regards to the open house, I would be remiss to not thank the Friends of South Tama Middle School for their presence at open house. They graciously provided cookies, lemonade, and also greeted visitors at the door.

Meeting the Challenge

Here’s the idea.  In November, 70+ Middle School students from 17 schools in an 18 county area meet for the very first time.  They split into groups of four and have to complete certain tasks by April.  They decide on a debatable topic of interest (the importance of homework, cell phone use, the war in Afghanistan), write an editorial for their local paper about the topic, and create a website to communicate to others about the topic.  As a final project, they communicate to others about their position on the topic using a medium of their choice (video, ebook, blog  etc.)  AND they don’t meet face-to-face again until the final meeting in April so all of this must be completed by communicating electronically.
